Why should I care about breathing?

Breathing effects every part of us - it drives the chemical responses in our bodies.

Through manipulating the breath we have our own internal chemist on hand to calm us down, make us more alert, improve our concentration and boost our immune system.

We can become more aware of our bodies and notice how our environment and thoughts effect our health and prevent illness before it happens.

We breathe on average 25,000 times a day, so even if we follow a healthy diet and exercise daily, if we are breathing in a way that doesn't support our internal environment we can never be fully healthy.

Breathing affects the:

  • Cardiovascular system (raises and lowers blood pressure)

  • Digestion

  • Endocrine system

  • Immune response

  • Nervous system

  • Renal system

  • Muscular system

  • Reproductive system

  • Lymphatic system

  • Inflammation in the body

  • Allergies

  • Asthma

  • Lymphatic system

  • Hormone levels

  • Skeletal system

Full breathing assessment will be provided to improve your wellbeing

  • Insomnia,

  • Breathlessness,

  • Palpitations,

  • Inability to relax, cannot sit still,

Test your breathing

  • Get a timer ready. After an exhale hold your breath and time how long you can hold your breath without forcing or pushing beyond an initial urge to breath.

Above 25 - this is average and indicates a good relationship with your breath. Healthy adults should aim for 40 seconds and above.

Anything below 25, and chronically below 10 shows a breathing disorder and becoming aware of this is the first step to increasing your wellbeing

  • Set a timer for one minute and count how many breaths you take in this time.

The more we breath the more we exhale quickly. Most oxygen is taken in through the lower lobes of our lungs so if we breath over 20 times a minute we will only use 50% of the oxygen we inhale.

If we breathe 12 times a minute we'll use 75%

Under 6 times a minute and we will use over 85%

Breathing slowly and deeper in our lungs improves every function in our body.
